I found this quite surprising (but not shocking – Serenity is a great film!), but in a poll of 3000 SFX readers, Serenity won by nearly 2:1 margin in comparison to Star Wars! Wow…

While trying to keep my own opinion out of this, surely this has more to do with the readership of SFX than it is a true reflection of opinion? I’m not sure whether SFX readers are generally into Star Wars or not (the impression I have is that they’d be more interested in Star Trek than Star Wars, but I’ve never read it and could be wrong), but my reaction is that the result of this poll at most shows that science fiction buffs prefer Serenity to Star Wars (and possibly shows much less, given that SFX is a subsection of the sci-fi community, and one which may or may not have a pro- or anti-Star Wars bias). To me that’s not a big surprise at all; ask a more varied cross-section of people the same question and the result would be rather different, I’d wager.
Incidentally, I’ve not seen Serenity. Or Firefly.

You should – they rock. But watch the series first.
Totally get your point, and its a very valid one – just posting the news as it was a little suprising.
To play devils advocate – the voting was online, and was highly pused on the force.net (http://www.theforce.net/latestnews/story/Star_Wars_Lagging_in_SFX_Poll_104230.asp)
to get star wars fans to vote, so i would argue that it is possibly a stronger vote amongst sci-fi fans than you say (i know… its a tentative line!)

Fair comment. I’m sure there are plenty of Star Wars fans who never go near theforce.net, but I would have expected a plea like that to yield a few more votes!

I just don’t get the passion that Serenity evokes. I think Whedon had just enough quirky lines left in him after Buffy to make a series and a movie. Is it cool to give Star Wars the bird and back the little guy?
I liked serenity, but not enough for repeat viewings. But then who the hell am I anyway. I dunno.
