I didn't know what to make of this when I read it last night but after looking it over Chris is definitely right. As it wasn't a sellout due to the plentiful stock we can see the absolute limit of units that can be sold when a system is launched at that price. I fully expect, as everyone who wanted to buy one has, that the sales will tank for the next few months until there is a price drop or new games come out. There was definitely a drop off in sales in the US and Japan and I expect that to be proportionally higher here.

I'd take that with a pinch of salt. Surely anyone can break sales records simply by having enough available on the day. Wii sold out on day one, beating the previous record; all Sony needed to do was make sure more PS3s were available on launch day.

I'd say we'll have to wait and see what happens in the longer term, when there are plenty available and all the real Sony nuts will have bought one; maybe even wait until the price starts to drop. What Sony can do (like Nintendo did too) is manipulate the units available on launch so they sell quickly at a higher price to those who'll buy it anyway. Breaking sales records adds to the hype and maybe creates extra demand, and is certainly better marketing than flooding the market and having them sitting unsold on shelves.
