Belief is a powerful thing - yours (and my) belief in the validity/correctness of science is at best going to be equal to other people's belief in their religeon.

I'd go so far as to say that one guy (or country) forcing its beliefs on another is the root cause of many of the problems in the world today.

Whilst I find ID to be a joke (I am a scientist/engineer after all) I don't see any particular reason why I shouldn't just leave them to get on with it. Whilst they keep it to themselves (and I dont see it replacing evolution as the dominant theory) its not gonna get in my way and I'm free to get on with whatever...

On the flip-side, teaching it in school could be seen in the light of my original example - one guy pushing his belief on others. That I don't like... However, I was reading that several of the pro-ID schools are in sufficiently religeous areas where the parents would *like* their children to be brought up in that way, so again - let them entertain themselves :-)

If you look at most religions there is a lack of compelling evidence to support it. Intelligent design seems to also have this lack of evidence and seems to be just an idea that someone has concocted to explain something that they can't. Perhaps people that are religious are more easily convinced than those who are not. Maybe this is why they believe Intelligent Design. I am not religious, not because I don't like the idea, but instead because for all I know it could all be made up stories, exaggerations and myths that have been made up thousands of years ago - it doesn't convince me.

Overall, I agree that evolution has a vast amount of supporting evidence whereas Intelligent Design seems to be some wild attempt at explaining evolution without undermining the Bible. I don't mind people having their opinions, but minority opinion is not what should the content of secondary school science lessons.

Religious people please don't beat me up about this, this is my opinion and I have no problem with you voicing yours.
