Why I’m an atheist

Friday, April 28th, 2006

I saw the video below this afternoon and it reminded me just why I no longer believe in God, and why I dont want to. Religion does some crazy things to some people, and the woman in this video really scares me! Religion seems to be able to give excuses for nearly everything, and quite frankly, I dont want to be associated with anyone as crazy as this woman.

I’m not saying that there arent millions of people who have a perfectly healthy connection to their religion, and I would never try to force my beliefs (or lack of) onto anyone else. I fully respect decisions people make in their beliefs, however when things go as far as they do in this video, i have to draw the line. I’m sorry lady, but as the reporter in this video says, you’re a nutcase…

Photos of my ‘toys’

Saturday, April 22nd, 2006

When i was back home recently, i went to Ikea and bought a Detolf cabinet to display my recent purchases of toys and busts. Afterall, what would be the point in buying them if they werent going to be on display?!

Now, i know many of you reading this will not appreciate the beauty of these items, however its an addiction that i cannot cure (and actually quite like). A bit like cocaine… but cheaper and less harmful to my body…
Anyway, onto the photos :) This is not my whole collection, rather a selection of the ones that are still at home (i have some on display up here in Nottingham too). Enjoy :D

UFC 59 roundup – tales from a gambler

Monday, April 17th, 2006

I decided to bet on my first UFC event the other evening, UFC 59, on Bet365.com.

I’d placed bets on Forest Griffin to win (I predicted that the fight could go either way), Nick Diaz to win, and an accumulator on Tito, Arlovski and Diaz. To be honest, the Griffin bet was a free one, and i thought the only person who may let me down was Diaz.

So i was correct on that count , and lost all my bets. But hell, i didnt care. The event was Amazing. I was watching it in bed late last night, but I jumped out of bed twice during Tito-Forest – what a bout! I must admit tho, i honestly thought that Forest had done enough to win that fight – i scored it 29-28, with Forest losing the first bout, but gaining the upper hand in the other two.

The Diaz – Sherk fight i was very disappointed with. To me, Diaz had no energy, although he was holding his own. Not really got much to say on this one.

Alovski vs Silvia was a bit of a shocker to me – i honestly thought the Pitbull would win it hands down. When he landed that blow on Silvia that sent him to the ground, I thought he had it. But what a recovery by Silvia! I hope he gets to fight Mir as he said he wanted to!

Overall, i thought UFC 59 was top stuff, and I intend to re-watch a few of the fights when i get chance :)

MRI of my brain!

Wednesday, April 12th, 2006

Today i helped out a friend by going an experiment of his in an MRI Scanner. It’s pretty wierd going in those things – the field is pretty strong, and if you forget to take your belt off (like i stupidly did) you can feel it within about 5m of the machine! That’s one hell of a strong magnet! The particular machine we used was more than double the strength of the ones that they use in hospital, but i’m told it’s still safe… (here’s to hoping!)

Anyway, the best bit about having it done was the fact that they gave me the data and told me where to get the software to have a mess around with it. So, after an hour or so playing with my brain this evening (so to speak), i’ve come up with the following two pretty cool images of my brain, as supplied by the machines at the Nottinghm Magnetic Resonance Centre! Funky ey?! So for all of you that have doubted that I had a brain in the past, here’s the proof that you’re wrong :P

Just remind me never to shave my head – its far to much of a strange shape!! :)

My Brain!

My Head (including brain!)

Legal TV Downloads coming our way?

Tuesday, April 11th, 2006

I read an article on BBC today, about Disney’s plans to put some of their TV shows (including Lost and Desperate Housewives) online for a free download. This could be really good news (longterm) as it could mean that there is no more missing tv shows that you really want to see, and people will no longer have to break the law to watch shows that they really want to see!

Lost

There are however a few problems in the way at the moment. For a start, its only going to be launched in the US for the time being (using IP addresses), so that means that we’re going to have to wait until the UK companies get themselves in gear. Not only this, but because the adverts are going to be non-skippable, that is going to mean a specialist player, probably laden with tons of DRM software and potentially spyware, which nobody wants.

Longterm, this could be a really good solution to the illegalities of people downloading TV shows – I certainly dont see why the BBC couldnt start doing this now (since they dont have adverts) for UK based people who own a TV licence (just enter your licence number).

For the time being however, it isnt a perfect solution. People will still continue to download advert free shows to catch up on things on their own software. This is definately something to keep an eye on though, as any developments could lead to leagalisation of a currently ‘black’ pastime.

Snowboarding

Sunday, April 9th, 2006

Les Deux AlpsI’ve just got back from an awesome Snowboarding trip to Les Deux Alps in France! This was organised by BUSC as their Main Event, and apart from the 23 hour coach journey each way was an excellent trip. The weather was fantastic, and I got loads of Snowboarding done, so all in all I had a fantastic time! I’ve improved loads on my board, although on the last day I managed to break my snowboard :(

I would definately recommend Les Deux Alps as a worthwhile ski resort – it has great snow, great weather and a brilliant snowpark if thats the sort of thing you are into. There isnt a massive number of slopes, but there are loads of off-piste opportunities. Definately my favorite resort i’ve been to so far. There are some good apres ski venues also :)

Took loads of great photos – see the album on Flickr, or view the slideshow! Video compilation coming soon(ish!)
