Drama School…very very scared

Wednesday, January 25th, 2006

I have now had audition dates for 3 of the drama schools I applied to! 2 of these are in the first two weeks of February :s
I have decided on my pieces, but still havent had chance to learn them all – starting to get very scared!

Got to knuckle down and learn them with all my spare time now, so if i dont post in a few days/weeks – that’s the reason! There’s only so much space in my head…

New screenshots of IE7

Monday, January 23rd, 2006

I’ve just seen some new screenshots of a pre-release of Internet Explorer 7. While it certainly looks nice, and a massive improvement on IE6, I can’t help but feel like i’ve seen it all before?! Yes, it certainly seems to have an air of Firefox about it, doesn’t it.

That really wouldnt be a problem for me, except for the fact that I can see loads of ignorant people getting IE7 shipped with their new pc and thinking that its all Microsoft’s innovation, when it is clearly Mozilla‘s open-source project that has led to these evolutions in browser technology. Power to the people!

uTorrent – great BitTorrent client

Sunday, January 22nd, 2006

uTorrentFor nearly 3 years now i have been using Azureus for all my BitTorrent needs. At the time, this was the easiest client to set up, use and download using, and I couldnt found anything better.

Until now…

I came across uTorrent about a month ago, and while it looked good, i really couldnt be bothered to go through the effort of changing over from Azureus. However, this morning, i started having a problem with the NAT testing (the test for checking the data can get through) on Azureus (even though my ports were definately open), so i thought i’d give uTorrent and try to see whether it had the same problems…

A word about my hosting

Thursday, January 19th, 2006

SniffhostI just want to say a quick word about my hosts, SniffHost. They have been absolutely brilliant in helping with all the problems I have had while setting up this blog, and in answering all my questions so far! I picked them because of their value for money (they seem to be one of the cheapest suppliers around), but in genuine honesty, I can say that the customer service is brilliant, and up to this point, i definately feel like i have got my money’s worth!
If you’re looking for hosting, you’ll now find a link to them in my sidebar :)

Skype

Sunday, January 15th, 2006

A few of my friends have been on at me for a while to download Skype, and when I got a free 30minute voucher from the shop the other day, I decided that there was no better time to give it a try!

After an incredibly easy install, i gave it a try by calling my mate John. It’s fab! The video and audio is very crisp, and the lipsync was near perfect! I intend to try make all my mates download it now so that i can chat to them on the phone instead of messenger for free… it’s much more personal :)

So, everybody, download Skype from the link on the right, and then Skype me :D

The Time Traveller’s Wife (Audrey Niffenegger)

Wednesday, January 11th, 2006

I finished reading this book the other day, and wanted to say what a good read it was.The premise of a librarian (Henry) who has known an art student (Clare) since she was six and he was thirty-six, yet married when Clare was twenty-two and he was thirty could initially come across to you in two ways: to the non sci-fi fan, you’d probably think, “hmmm…not my cup of tea”, and to the seasoned sci-fi fan, you’d probably think “not another bloody time travelling book!”.

But neither of those opinions would be correct. Henry is diagnosed with the first case of Chrono-Displacement Disorder, which means that periodically, with no control, he is shifted around in time. He regularally meets Clare in these jumps, but often finds himself in much less favorable situations. The story is told from both Clare and Henry’s point of view, and while you may think that this could be hard to follow, it somehow just works, and you always know what is going on – a lot of planning has gone into this book!
At the core, this is a story of love, true love, and how it can surpass all boundaries – even time. However, there is much more that goes on around the outer layers as we learn about how their close friends feel about all this, the complications of time-travelling, and the problems of trying to have children who inherit the time travelling gene before they have even left the womb! There are some genuinely tear jerking moments in this story, along with some points when you just cant help but laugh out loud.

I wouldnt really put this into the Sci-fi genre – it’s a love story that happens to revolve around a couple, one of whom time travels. This is a book that anyone can read, and read it they should! I rate this book:

[rate 4.5]

Root of all Evil?

Monday, January 9th, 2006

Just watched a really interesting program on Channel 4 called the Root of all Evil.

It was a (i must say) pretty biased, opinion on religion from a very athiest Oxford University lecturer about how he believes that religion is the ‘root of all evil’. I must say, he raised some extremely valid points, and while it was incredibly biased, and he seemed quite arrogant about his ‘beliefs’, some of the things that the religious people came out with were laughable.

I’m still not sure of where I lie in the religion states, but this was certainly food for thought! Catch the next episode (of this two part series) next Monday @ 8pm on Channel 4
